The Biggest Dune: Where Is It?

Where is the tallest sand dune in North America? A hint: it is the state with 58 fourteeners, mountains higher than 14,000 feet. The Great Sand Dunes National Park has a sandy peak 755 feet tall. Sue and I passed on the climb, which would have taken the better part of a day in the squishy surface. Star Dune is the name of the big pile of granules. Where is it? Colorado!
The Sangre de Cristo Mountains rise behind the great sand dunes range.

  1. This place confounds! Me and my gang made two trips to GSD, spending one basking in the sun sitting along Medano Creek and the other getting exfoliated by 50 mph winds. Totally reaffirmed the fact that the last place you want to be during 50 mph winds is next to a big pile of sand!

      1. I can imagine the difficulty of walking on the sand and it moving beneath your feet every time you take a step. I think I’d take a few spills before I got the hang of it. 😁😁😁
