Yosemite’s Half Dome can intimidate even the hardiest hiker.
Five thousand feet of elevation gain to 8,800 feet at the top; 12 hours (for the average hiker); 16 miles roundtrip. The final climb is so steep and slick that hikers pull themselves up using cables attached to the granite. Some quit and turn around at the cables. Some die trying the climb.
Everett Kalin, who scaled Half Dome on July 18, is not your average hiker. Accompanied by his son and granddaughter, he summited the iconic dome at 93 years of age.
I climbed Half Dome at 40, and I found it to be one tough adventure. Read more and watch a short video of him reaching the top on UNILAD.
The photo here shows him after he cleared the cables.
I am in awe. Watch for Everett on the talk-show circuit!
